In May, 2001, in memory of Former Minnesota Governor Harold Stassen, the MNYR Executive Board created the Harold Stassen Leadership Award to honor the MNYR founder. The first recipient of this award was Second District Congressman Mark Kennedy, who in 2000 won a close and hard-fought election battle, which culminated in a month-long recount, against 4-term incumbent David Minge to become the only Republican to unseat an incumbent Democrat in the country that year. The MNYRs look forward to bestowing this award at our annual dinner to the Republican leader who has fought hardest to preserve our principles and build our party.
